When making a prospectus for a school, I take the approach that, firstly, its for prospective parents and, to that end, I treat the cover of the book as though it were the outside of the school and then the pages inside represent what goes on behind the school gates.

Prospective parents are usually somewhat familiar with the outside, and I like to use the front cover as a welcome to the school. There are many facets to a school’s exterior and when I’ve made several books for a school I am handed the opportunity to showcase new aspects of the school each year. It’s especially useful if the school has something new to show off - a new playground or building, for example.

I have worked with Goodrich Community Primary school in East Dulwich for many years and have produced five prospectuses. Here, I have had a yearly challenge to represent the school effectively on the front cover and have ended up with some great shots and views which you can see in the gallery below. Sadly, this year’s book has had to be postponed because of the pandemic but I’m hoping to get going with it soon.

The location of a school can often be a surprise, one I can remember was nestled right beside Tottenham football stadium and another that I’ve made a couple of prospectuses for is St. Mark’s at the Oval in London. It is right next door to the cricket stadium and it was a no-brainer to feature this aspect on the front page, it made for an impressive backdrop! For their next prospectus, I featured their beautiful pond and nature area, a part of the school that is not necessarily visible to a passer-by or known about by a prospective parent. Featuring it on the front cover immediately showcases the environment and learning opportunities on offer.

Below is a gallery of some of the photographs taken with the idea that they are to be used for the front cover… here you can see them with out school names and other details yet having been applied.

Here this gallery shows the final front covers of the prospectuses, cropping the images for maximum impact and to suit the text that is flowed onto them.
