Zen and the Art of the School Environment
This week I visited a school in Ruislip and spent the day gathering shots for their new website. It was 30 degrees and I covered 10km, darting around between lessons, break times and outdoor learning. What struck me was the wonderful environment that the school had managed to create: a geodesic dome for science/maths/gardening activities; a huge natural area for forest school; a pond big enough for whole class activities and wonderful outdoor art that beautifully blended nature and creativity. There was also an a courtyard with water features and storytelling areas that had the feel of a spa!! The school building itself almost disappeared into this environment, it being only one story high. It felt that anywhere a child might find themselves, there would be something to stimulate interest and engage with.
