Outdoor Learning
Forest School - what a wonderful addition to primary education. I’ve even been to a coastal school where they have Beach School! Though sadly, it was raining that day and we didn’t get to go… With children spending less time outdoors playing and exploring, forest school provides a space to be free, to dig, plant, whittle, climb and build - if it’s nature-based it’s possible! I’ve seen some ingenious uses of space in urban schools and some expansive areas created for schools where space is not limited. Some children dig clay from the soil whilst trains go past on the other side of the fence. Some paint trees whilst planes take off from the airport nearby, or the football stadium is demolished next door. Where more space is available I’ve seen zip-wires, campsites, tree-houses, and allotments. One thing that unites them all is that they provide natural freedom for the children that get to use them.
